DLEG Bureau of Fire Services Teams Up with Detroit Red Wings to Distribute Smoke Detectors to Low Income Metro Detroit Families

January 15, 2008 – The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth Bureau of Fire Services is teaming up with the Detroit Red Wings to get life-saving smoke detectors in the homes of low income families in metro Detroit.

On January 9th, Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg distributed more than 2,000 smoke detectors to the State Fire Marshal; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF); and local fire departments at Joe Louis Arena. Zetterberg, who serves as the Red Wings' spokesman for the team's annual smoke detector collection, generously matched the total number of detectors collected at Red Wings game earlier this season with a personal donation.

The State Fire Marshal received 280 Kidde Smoke Detectors with batteries for distribution.

“Thanks to the generosity of the Detroit Red Wings and their loyal fans, we will be able to get these smoke detectors to southeast Michigan fire departments for installation into the homes of people who need it most,” said State Fire Marshal Andrew Neumann. “It’s sad to hear of any Michigan family who does not have a smoke detector in their home, particularly because they can’t afford it. Anyone who donated to this Red Wing program, including Henrik Zetterberg, deserves a very big thank you for helping to save the lives of their fellow Michiganians.”

Any fire department that is a member of the Oakland County Fire Prevention Society, Metro Detroit Fire Inspectors or Macomb County Fire Prevention Society and has an active program within their department for installation of the detectors within their community, can request a donation in writing to DLEG’s Bureau of Fire Services, Farmington Regional Office, Attn: Region Supervisor, Mick Dingman, 24155 Drake Rd, Farmington MI, 48335. The detectors will be distributed to these fire departments on a first come, first served basis.
